Privacy and Cybersecurity Considerations in Remote Work Environments – Employee Benefits and Beyond

This program has been approved for 1.0 CLE credits.

Presenters: Justin Musil and Melissa Zabkowicz, Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many businesses to pursue telework arrangements for their employees.  In this presentation, we will explore general privacy and cybersecurity considerations for employers whose employees work remotely, including legally required obligations as well as best practices. While all employers are impacted by privacy and cybersecurity considerations, employee benefit plans and their service providers are particularly impacted because they often maintain volumes of sensitive or confidential information that falls under the law's protection.  Because benefit plans may receive varying treatment under the current patchwork of federal and state privacy and cybersecurity laws, HR employees, compliance officers, and plan personnel face unique challenges while performing their daily functions; we will focus a portion of the presentation on addressing these challenges.  Cyber attackers have also used COVID-19 as an opportunity to target businesses and personnel who are charged with safeguarding plan assets, participant information and other personal information held by the business, so continued vigilance to these threats remains imperative to reduce the organization's risk of loss and liability.
